Hi, there!
Welcome to my portfolio! My name is Mary Ellis Beach, and I am a first-year student at Davidson College from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, which you will likely find evidence of in portfolio. Currently, I am pursuing an interdisciplinary major in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) and a minor in Educational Studies. More generally, though, I am interested in learning about how practices of empathy and structures of memory facilitate justice. While there is no correct way to go about reviewing my portfolio, I would recommend starting with my Definition of Justice and following up with my Key Terms—concepts that I found to be most pertinent to the portfolio as a whole. Next, I would review my research paper, which is the lies at the heart of this portfolio. From there, navigate to Some New Things and Campus Commentaries, which are the most personal elements of this work. Afterwards, feel free to explore any of the additional writing assignments and Expanded Annotations I have included. There is no correct way to go about it, but that is what I suggest. The grid-like layout of this portfolio acts as a memorial to my time in Humes by mimicking the structure of the website used to access my course materials.
My assemblage of this portfolio was only made possible by the help of my professors and classmates. I want to thank the entire professorship of the Humanities program, including Dr. Bory, Dr. Jankovic, Dr. Lipsker, Dr. O’Geen, Dr. Weimers, Dr. Course-Esquival, and Dr. Wills. To my section-leaders, thank you for your patience and support as well as your thoughtful feedback on components of this portfolio. Dr. Duncan, thank you for your masterful navigation of WordPress in helping me to present my ideas. I also want to give a shoutout to Neta Ariely ‘28 and Juan Perez ‘28 for their mentorship as my designated fellows. Last but certainly not least, thank you to my fellow Humesters, Reyna Mehta, Hunter Pearson, Declan Lonergan, Taddeo Simon, and Chloe Butler, for allowing me a walk in your shoes, as well as my second and third graders at Ada Jenkins for their intelligence. And thank you, yes you, for taking the time to survey my portfolio. I hope its one to remember!
